XDI.ORG Privacy Statement

Introduction

In keeping with its purpose and principles, XDI.ORG takes online privacy very seriously. We actively protect the privacy of users of the XDI.ORG site and people who subscribe to XDI.ORG mailing lists.

Web Server Usage

XDI.ORG records information about how people access XDI.ORG Web sites. This information includes IP addresses (or the DNS name associated with it) and the Web browser software used. Unless your IP address or its DNS name identifies you specifically, there is no way XDI.ORG can use this connection information to identify a particular user. Specific Web server usage information is only available to the XDI.ORG staff, although XDI.ORG may publish aggregate information about Web site usage, such as the total number of hits or users in a given period. Aggregate information does not include personal identifying information even if that information has been provided to XDI.ORG.

The XDI.ORG main Web site does not use HTTP cookies. The XDI.ORG wiki Web site uses HTTP cookies only to maintain a user session and the XDI.ORG mail lists uses cookies only if you opt to change your default membership options (not essential for mail list subscription).

XDI.ORG may record information about queries submitted to XDI.ORG search facilities to better understand how people use the site's search features. As with other Web accesses, this information generally cannot be associated with any particular user. In any case, query information is not disclosed to anyone outside the XDI.ORG staff.

Subscription Lists & Email Addresses

XDI.ORG holds the names and email addresses of subscribers in the strictest confidence, and will not disclose specific subscriber information under any circumstances unless required by law. XDI.ORG subscriber databases and subscription lists can be accessed by only a few XDI.ORG staff members and are well protected against theft, tampering, and misuse (electronic or otherwise).

Aggregate information about XDI.ORG subscription lists that does not include specific identifying information about individual subscribers (such as the total number of subscribers) may be discussed in XDI.ORG mailing lists or publications, or used to promote XDI.ORG.

To receive an XDI.ORG publication or subscribe to an XDI.ORG mailing list via email, you must provide your email address-without it, you won't receive anything. Although XDI.ORG doesn't require subscribers to provide their names, your email program or provider may include your name with your subscription request. If so, XDI.ORG will record your name with your email address; the information helps ensure that you are not confused with anyone else when manually sorting out subscription problems.

Discussion Lists & Archives

XDI.ORG maintains email discussion lists with Web-based archives. Although subscriber information is maintained in the strictest confidence (see above), participating in discussion lists will reveal information about yourself such as your email address and (possibly) your name to all subscribers. A third party could collect this information. Additionally, users should consider any discussion list a public forum, and exercise caution in disclosing any personal information.

Web-based archives of discussion lists maintained by XDI.ORG will also include information disclosed by discussion participants; however, XDI.ORG goes to some effort to ensure automated programs can't easily harvest information such as email addresses.

Electronic Mail

In addition to email messages sent to public discussion forums noted above, email messages sent to XDI.ORG staff members or role accounts (like postmaster) are considered public statements. Although XDI.ORG will endeavor not to distribute these messages outside of the XDI.ORG staff, electronic mail is not a secure medium and XDI.ORG cannot guarantee the security of email messages in transit. In addition, email messages may be manually or automatically transferred or forwarded to servers and networks outside of the direct control of XDI.ORG. XDI.ORG takes reasonable precautions to ensure these messages are accessible only to XDI.ORG staff or appropriate third parties, but cannot guarantee the security of messages transferred to (or stored on) systems which are not controlled by XDI.ORG. If you're deeply concerned about the security of an email message, consider protecting the message using a strong public key encryption technology such as PGP.

Surveys

XDI.ORG may ask Web site users to participate in surveys. In all cases, participation will be voluntary. If a survey asks for personal information, answering those questions will be optional.

External Links

XDI.ORG Web sites may contain links to other Web sites. XDI.ORG cannot be responsible for the privacy practices of other organizations or the content of external Web sites.

Contacting XNSORG about Personal Information

If you or someone else has submitted personal information about you through the XDI.ORG Web site and you would like to have that information deleted from XDI.ORG databases, please email privacy@xdi.org, or send a letter to XDI.ORG, 12233 Corliss Ave N, Seattle, Washington 98133, USA. XDI.ORG cannot control the content of email information even when it is stored on XDI.ORG servers or archives. But if you request, XDI.ORG will delete personal information about you that you have provided directly to XDI.ORG.
